RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil)
Palm oil is the most versatile vegetable oil globally, found in a wide range of food and industrial products, including cooking oils, margarines, ice cream, chocolate, pizza dough, biscuits, cookies, and bread. It is also an ingredient in industrial products such as liquid detergents, soap, shampoo, lipstick, polishes, and industrial lubricants.
Despite its unique qualities as a product and high demand, palm oil has garnered a mixed reputation. When produced unsustainably and without proper control, it can have negative impacts on the environment, wildlife, and human rights. Unsustainable palm oil production, particularly observed in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America, has led to deforestation, causing harm to forests and wildlife.
Clearing forests to cultivate palm oil has resulted in the detriment of forested areas and wildlife habitats. Workers and farmers involved in palm oil production often face poor working conditions and low wages.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) aims to ensure the sustainability of palm oil plantations, reducing the negative impact on rainforests. Producers using RSPO-certified palm oil contribute to the sustainability of these plantations and, consequently, the protection of rainforests.
